Bark For Awareness Winner – Week 13

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Team,

Week 13 was not unlucky for one Official Vick Dog Chew Toy Bark For Awareness Organization!  Before we reveal the winner, let’s review what occurred to the hated Eagles and Mike Vick in week 13.

Unfortunately, the Texans could not stop the Eagles and our villain, Mike Vick took another step towards what is possibly an MVP bid for 2010.  If you are a follower of The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy you already know that we ARE NOT going to let him receive any further awards without letting our voices be heard!

The Texans were able to score 3 TD’s against Vicks Eagles.  So, our week 13 winner will receive 3 FREE Official Vick Dog Chew Toys!  All you need is the votes!

So, who generated the votes?  I first will tell you that voting was WAY up from previous weeks.  I thank you all for your participation.  Of the 280 votes cast, 2 previous winners battled it out for the FREE toys!  J and J’s Homeless Pets recently took home some toys by winning in week 12.  Carolina Care Bullies seem to ALWAYS be in the hunt.  Congratulations to both for generating the interest for their great organizations.

So, who won?  Well, tis’ the season, right?  I am in a giving mood and want to spread the winnings around.  In this time where donations are more difficult to come by, people tightening their giving and great organizations still out there doing great things for our pets, I want to give back as well.  So here is the deal:

Who won week 13?  THREE Organizations did!  The organization to receive the most votes was Carolina Care Bullies.  CCB took 54% of the total vote, so let’s declare them the outright winner.  However, in the spirit of giving let me also acknowledge and reward the 2nd and 3rd place organizations:

In 2nd place was J and J’s Homeless Pet Rescue.  In 3rd place was Bully Breed Rescue.  Carolina Care Bullies will receive 3 FREE Official Vick Dog Chew Toys.  J and J’s Homeless Pet Rescue will receive 2 FREE Official Vick Dog Chew Toys and Bully Breed Rescue will receive 1 FREE Official Vick Dog Chew Toy.  Congratulations to all!

Before I end with a profile of each organization, let me say that I appreciate everyone out there that care for our beloved pets.  In my latest blog and FB entry I mention that I recently adopted a pet from a shelter.  I know understand more than ever what it takes to care for a pet.  So many great people make it their mission and dedicate their lives to caring for pets.  You are ALL special and appreciated.

Thanks for all you do.

Carolina Care Bullies:

Carolina Care Bullies is 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, comprised of multiple foster homes that exist throughout the state of North Carolina. CCB strives to decrease the pit bull euthanasia rate in North Carolina shelters by broadening the understanding of bully breeds; offering support to owners of bully breeds; caring for deserving pit bulls in the loving homes of generous foster families; and placing pit bulls in responsible permanent homes

J and J’s:

J and J’s Homeless Pet Rescue is a non-profit organization and has its 501(c)3 tax exempt status. We depend solely on public donations and adoption fees for financial survival. No contribution is too small, and your donations are tax-deductible! We have no paid employees. Contributions, fund raising and our own personal out-of-pocket money is how we take care of all the animals. We are the only non-profit rescue in Beaufort County that currently houses animals for adoption. All the animals in our care receive everything they need as far as medical care, food, shelter, flea and tick prevention and heartworm prevention. In the past two years, J and J has partnered with reputable rescues in New Virginia, Maryland, New York, New Hampshire and Connecticut to save the lives of almost 200 animals from local NC shelters.

Bully Breed Rescue:

Bully Breed Rescue is a small rescue dedicated to rescuing and rehoming dogs that are the pit bull class of dogs, including American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs, and pit bull mixes. Our goal is to help give these precious misunderstood dogs a second chance at the wonderful life that they deserve by placing them in forever homes. All of our dogs have been temperament tested and we try to provide honest and complete information on each dog. We operate solely on our own funds, in addition to adoption fees, so we have to keep the rescue small. We do not have a shelter – all of our dogs are in foster homes.

I Have A Dog!

Now that I have a Dog!

I have been intimately involved with The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy effort for over 4 years now.  Through this effort I have come to love and admire what animal supporters do.  This admiration has come mainly through the self sacrifice and absolute devotion that so many have shared though my efforts to raise awareness of animal abuse.

I have been without a pet for several years.  I have always believed that if you are going to have a pet you must be ready to provide the best situation possible for the mutual benefit of your new adoptee and the family that he / she is introduced to.  Well, I have been waiting for such a time.  My Family of 6 have been asking for a pet forever.  I have been the kill joy of all their wishes, citing things like the lack of a fenced in yard, adequate room, things we would have to give up and on and on.

My twin Daughters received a pair of goldfish for their birthdays.  Now, you can measure the lifespan of a goldfish in hours.  So, when one died, (cuff died, link survived), I headed out to Petco to purchase a suitable replacement.  Upon arrival at Petco I found Springfield Animal Rescue, an Organization in Jacksonville, FL that I had grown familiar with through The Vick Dog Chew Toy efforts.  I SWORE I only saw cats, which was a safe zone for me and my three kids in tow, since no one wanted a cat.  As I approached the volunteers I was immediately drawn to a crate that housed an amazingly calm puppy.  I was introduced to Oliver.

As a business person I know sales people when I see them.  Certainly, the purpose of anyone that is involved with a rescue organization is to be a bit, “salesy”.  However, their sales efforts did not have to be very good at all for me to be drawn to Oliver.  After a few trial days I became a dog owner for the first time in many years.

It has been three weeks now and my Family and I have integrated Oliver into our lives quite well.  Oliver is now as much of a family member as anyone.  However, Oliver is a 5 month old Lab / Great Dane mix.  Oliver is ALL PUPPY!  Very well behaved, but ALL PUPPY!

I write this entry because I am extremely blessed and happy that I was able to give a neglected dog a home; something that I have been celebrating through The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy efforts.  Equally, I write this because for the first time in four years I completely understand what it takes to care for a pet. Now, more than ever before, I understand the love, devotion, attention and sacrifice it takes to care for a pet.  I have more appreciation for animal care organizations than ever before.  One wears me out.  I cannot imagine what those organizations that care for multiple pets go through!

Oliver has given me even more respect for the GREAT ORGANIZATIONS that care for neglected, abused and unwanted pets.  You can find a small sample of those organizations at http://www.officialvickdogchewtoy.com/giveaway.html

Remember, these are just a few.  Please give all you can to support the great organizations in your community that seek to give our pets a better life.  Also, if you are looking for a pet please look for a shelter pet.

Thanks for your interest and support.

Sincerely,

Darren Usher

Animal Rights?

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Do animals really deserve rights?

I have always thought so.  However, a very popular radio host that I listen to regularly raised the point that made me rethink the term, “animal rights”.

For the past 3 plus years I have been intimately involved with a cause that what I feel helps to prevent cruelty to animals.  But is that really, “animal rights”?  I have been thinking over the past couple of days what defines the term.  I can tell you, it is a deeper topic than what I have been thinking all along.

Do animals have rights?  We as people definitely do, but do our rights transcend the same to our beloved pets?  The answer is no.  Pets do not have the same rights as humans.  As humans we have the rights to do, say, think and go as we please.  That is because we can logically manuvour through the world using our inherent logic.  Can our pets do the same?

Well, if so then why aren’t all pets free to roam and come and go as they please?  Why are they property of an “owner”?  The answer is simple: our pets cannot logically observe the rules of life like we can as humans.  Thus our animals have to be protected by their logically thinking owners.   Under that level of protection that is necessary and needed, do animals give up their rights?

Animal rights is a term that someone coined.  What is the definition?  I think that we need to understand it so that we can place in perspective what we strive to do for the benefit of our pets.

Take this scenario:  you and I have the right to be protected against vicious acts aimed against us.  However, what about the rights of the zebra on the African Plain that gets attacked by the lion?  Does the zebra have the same rights as you and I?  If so, who is going to bring the lion up on charges?

Our pets have the “right” to exist in an environment that is free from intentional harm.  Our pets have the “right” to live in an environment that is free from distress, an environment that is healthy and an environment that is free from intentional acts of violence.  If you can not or do not provide a healthy environment for your pet, that pet has the “right” to be removed from you and placed in an environment that is healthy.  So, under these legal pet “rights”, do pets gain the same rights as humans?

If we believe that pets are free to come and go as they please, granting them “animal rights” just as we humans have, then those of us humans that contain and own pets can be considered as slave masters.  Right?

What I have gathered through contemplation of this topic is:

Pets do not have the same “rights” as humans because they rely on humans to protect them.

Pets exist for the mutual pleasure of both the owner and the pet.  However, they have the “right” to be treated with kindness, protected against evil and the right to exist in an environment that is healthy.

When our pets are mistreated or abused, then the law has the “right” to throw your ass in jail!  I like that “right”!

If these conditions and mandates to us as pet owners are considered “animal rights”, then I am all for it!
