How did I create the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy Name?

Monday, August 17th, 2009

As any Marketing Specialist will tell you, naming a product is the most critical step in determining the success of the endeavor. Creative reference, ease of advertising, product familiarity and brand association are all important factors when considering a name for your idea, concept, or company.

With the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy it was a little different. While I wanted to utilize the recent news stories to try and bring awareness and offer an option to fight back, I could ill afford to come in conflict with the mighty National Football League or the Atlanta Falcons. Additionally, I never wanted to make this a battle against Michael Vick, the person. My concept was much bigger than just one man. Instead, I wanted to create the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy to be about the actions and the behaviors that harm our beloved pets each day. Not just with the actions of one group, but also for the actions of the groups that we never hear about. I wanted to Raise Awareness! I wanted to make sure that everyone knew that this was not an isolated case and that it’s not just a single incident simply because of one individuals actions.

My research forced me to remember back to both my pets and the pets of my friends. My memories were good and I quickly discovered that through my entire life I was fortunate to be surrounded by many family friends that truly added value to their owners and those around them.

One particular pet that came to mind was a dog named Victor. This was a dog that a friend had. I met the individual when I first moved to Jacksonville back in the early 1990’s. I was introduced to his dog shortly after we became friends. Victor was his “official” name but everyone called the dog Vick. Vick was a Pit Bull and at a glance, a very intimidating animal. However, once Vick greeted you, it was instantly apparent that he was a very gentile and loving dog. One thing that stuck out about Vick was his desire for water. Vick always sought out the water every time he would see the beach, a swimming pool, a sprinkler, or a water hose. Anything wet was fair game for Vick. I remember thinking that this was odd for the breed, but was certainly a source of memorable entertainment for both Vick and everyone that witnessed his actions. Vick was a good dog. Vick was the dog that first came to fame in our article with AP Writer Demorris Lee of the St. Pete Times. See it here.

A quick turn to the news and suddenly I was blasted with horrible visions of mistreated, abused dogs. So many that resembled and reminded me of Vick. The dog chew toy that I had in mind to create had to be named after Vick. The name of the NFL QB that sponsored these hideous actions should not be confused as the source of the naming of my product. I will admit that Michael Vick shares the name of one of the best dogs I can remember and that certainly didn’t hurt our opportunity to raise awareness of the endeavor.

Convenient coincidence on the name? Some say so and criticize the connection. I am fine with that. However, to name our dog chew toy deliberately and solely upon the fact that it resembles the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback would have certainly have caused the National Football League to shut us down before we began. Our explanation to the National Football League regarding the name, the same exact explanation as I give you above, was enough to satisfy the National Football League. I am hoping that the information satisfies your curiosity as well. The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy was born!

So, what about the toy? Next entry: creating a product.

The Beginn-ing of the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy

Hello Dog Fans.

How does an idea begin? It is said that most creative ideas and entrepreneurial endeavors begin during time of economic unrest. If that is the case, there should be several entrepreneurs beginning their efforts right now. If you have an idea, a dream, a concept, or a service that you feel you can provide that will serve the common good; I encourage you to run with your dreams. I hope that my stories help your journey. Entrepreneurialism is the backbone of America.

How did my idea begin? Rather innocently and by total accident. I am a sports fan. I could not help but hear about the stories in the news regarding a certain National Football League figure that was arrested for animal abuse. Now, I am also a pet lover just as much as a sports fan. I remember thinking at the time that another public figure being arrested for doing something stupid is unfortunately not exactly, “breaking news”. As I arrived at home that night I remember reading the details regarding the incident involving an National Football League QB. It was then that I realized this was not a, “normal”, case. As I read through the stories I was absolutely shocked and disturbed by what was reported. This was by far more serious than I would have ever thought when a passer by briefly mentioned the story to me.

By nature I believe that I am a, “do something”, individual. When I see situations I tend to ask myself the question, “What can I do to add value or make a difference?”. I prefer to take this approach rather than sitting back and criticizing or complaining. This approach has offered me unique opportunities and experiences that I would not have benefited from had I just remained on the sidelines. This has been the case in my experience with sports and in real life. For example, when our team was down or needed a big play, I wanted the ball. When our neighborhood needed assistance with our Community Association, I stepped up and became the President of our Association. I tell you this not to glamorize or set myself on a pedestal, but rather to give you some insight as to how the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy came to life. I will also tell you that sometimes trying to get to involved can lead to more pain than good. So my character trait has also lead me to challenges I did not foresee.

After reading the details of the animal abuse, I remember finding it hard to fall asleep that night. I could not believe and maybe tried not to believe that any human would willingly treat a defenseless animal in the ways described. As I woke the next morning I found even further evidence that was proof that the allegations were not assumptions and speculation, but rather fact. I kicked in to gear at that point.

I remember making the following comment several times to various individuals: “why doesn’t someone make a dog chew toy that resembles this individual so that animals can get revenge”? I wanted to raise the awareness of these atrocities. I was so worried at the time that our cynical nature would quickly sweep this story under the proverbial rug and the public would forget about these awful actions. We see this play out so often, especially when there is a ton of media attention given in a very short period of time. I was determined to do something so that people would not forget and do something that would remind others that animal abuse is real and a tragic story that plays out everyday.

I did not get much reaction to my idea of a vick dog chew toy other than, “hey, that’s a good idea”. My idea was a good one, or so I thought, but did not get the reaction that I thought it would or should. Finally, I mentioned the idea to a few individuals that thought it was a very good marketing idea. After insisting that this remain as an awareness endeavor and a way to give back to local organizations that share our same efforts. Missions that you will find are consistent and have held true in all my communication for almost two years now. After receiving buy in that my idea would be used to support our mission, we needed a plan. We also needed a name for this dog chew toy.

You will find that information and more in my next entry.

I appreciate your interest in my story. Stay tuned.

Official Vick – Introduction

Hello Fellow Official Vick Dog Fans!

I have been involved in the process of documenting our adventures as they relate to the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy. I believe it is finally time to share our experience. More specifically, our COMPLETE experience.

Our adventures with this product have taught us a great deal. It has been a learning experience that you simply could not get in college. Marketing, International Shipping, Manufacturing, dealing with the Media, Legal Affairs, Copyright Laws, Intellectual Property Rights, Charities and Charitable Contributions are just a few of the topics. We have had to gain a great deal of knowledge about in a very short period of time. And when I mention the word, “knowledge”, I speak to the fact that if at any time we would have failed in any of these areas, the Vick Dog Chew Toy would have failed.

I also want to write about the facts. The facts about the Official Vick Dog Chew Toy that I brought to life. I did not do it alone and could not have done this alone, but I did originate the idea. There has been a lot written that contain many lies, assumptions and one sided perspectives. I have remained quiet regarding the imposters, the lies and others that have attempted to claim this idea as their own. I am now ready to set the record straight.

The goal of my stories will not be to simply set the record straight. The main goal of my story will be to help others based on the lessons gained through this wonderful experience. Facts will be introduced, documents will be provided and information will be shared that will lend a very unique perspective on our plight to not only bring the vick dog chew toy to life, but also to sustain it’s image, efforts to raise awareness and selling power.

I have been pressed by many to tell the story. Many want to document the endeavor. I was torn as to how I will present the story. After careful consideration I have decided to share various stories via this blog. There is to much history and helpful information to share just through a blog, so I will judge reaction and make decisions on other outlets to share our story.

In the meantime I hope you tune in to the Official Dog Blog and I hope that the information I share will be insightful, helpful, interesting and will hopefully make you smile. Maybe even laugh!

I appreciate your interest.
