Chew On This Subway!

I was moved from my chair by the recent news that Michael Vick won an award. Among the awards given at the BET Awards on Sunday night was one for Subway Sportsman of the Year. And guess who won?

And with nearly 8 million viewers watching, the award went to Vick. The five finalists were Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose, and Michael Vick.

The star quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles may be phenomenal on the field. but with his recent dogfighting past, it probably wasn’t the wisest PR move Subway could have made. Yes, the award likely focuses on the sports side of a player, and not the personal life. But those tortured and maimed dogs are still fresh in many minds, and those minds may not take kindly to the association of Subway and Vick.

There’s already fallout from the decision. A Facebook page is urging dog lovers to “Just Say No Way to Subway.” It’s linked to a Care2 petition site that’s collecting signatures and giving a phone number for customer service at Subway (800.888.4848). The petition site asks people to call the number or email Subway saying they’ll boycott the sandwich stores until Michael Vick gives back his award. So far the petition has about 2,500 names, and the Facebook page has nearly 7,000 Likes.

Dogsters, what do you think of the award going to Vick? Is it well deserved because of what a good player he is? Or should he not have even been considered for the award? Will this affect how you feel about Subway?

For those of you who don’t mind a bit of swearing, check out the snippet of this YouTube video that goes from :58 to 2:08. It’s from a man who watched the BET awards and couldn’t believe Vick won. He calls it “WTF!!! MICHAEL VICK WINS SPORTSMAN OF THE YEAR!!!!” (There’s one F-bomb in this segment, but they rain down in the rest of the video, and the rest isn’t about Vick, so no need to watch it unless you’re curious and can handle a cuss storm.)

(Update 8:30 a.m. June 28: It turns out it’s apparently BET that decides who wins. Subway is the sponsor and has no role in decision making, we’ve been told. One of our readers commented below that she spoke with a Subway customer service representative who said “they will most likely not sponsor this award again because there have been so many calls about people’s outrage about Michael Vick’s being associated with Subway.”)

Turn Bad Newz into Good Newz?

What are you looking at?

Animal rescuers at Dogs Deserve Better have their eyes set on the house that Philadelphia Eagles Michael Vick ran his illegal dog fighting ring “Bad Newz Kennels” from, and are raising the money to purchase the property and transform it into a new and improved dog rescue center.

“The group is planning to put $176,507 toward the down payment of the $595,000 house,” says Curbed “which first hit the market for $757,000 in ’08. The plan? Renovate the 4,600-square-foot house into a $2.5M facility named Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs as a spin on Bad Newz Kennels, the name of Vick’s old operation.”

According to Wikipedia, in July 2007, Vick and three other men were charged by federal authorities with felony charges of operating an unlawful interstate dog fighting venture known as “Bad Newz Kennels.” Vick was accused of financing the operation, directly participating in dog fights and executions, and personally handling thousands of dollars in related gambling activities.

During trials, Vick admitted to providing a great deal of the financing for the operation and to engaging in several dog fights in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and South Carolina. He admitted to splitting proceeds from dog fights and admitted to knowledge of dogs being slaughtered for poor performance. He further admitted to being responsible in the murder of 6 to 8 dogs, by both hanging or drowning.

Curbed continues that “Dogs Deserve Better had tried to buy the house in March but hadn’t raised enough money by the deadline and asked for a thirty-day extension.

“The house has five bedrooms and four and a half baths, but the animal rights group plans to build a $2.5M dollar facility on the fifteen acre property”

The organization currently has raised $178,046 for the down payment on the house, but will require further funding to complete renovations and remodeling.  If you would like to make a donation you can do so by visiting the Dogs Deserve Better webpage.

I appreciate your interest.

Spring Time With The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Hello Official Vick Dog Chew Toy Fans!

As winter releases its grips on most of the US and spring begins it’s decent across our Nation more and more of us are getting back out with our beloved pets. As we open our windows and doors for the first time in 2011 you are sure to find great outdoor pet events popping up across your cities, towns and neighborhood.

I want to encourage you to support these great events. These neighborhood events present a fantastic way to show your appreciation to local organizations that rely on your support to continue their great assistance in caring for pets. These events present an opportunity for you and your pet to bond with your friends and neighbors and enjoy the outdoors together.

In celebration of the 2011 Spring Season, I want to present the most creative ideas that The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy has been involved in. The orchestrators of these events really know how to have fun, involve their pets and show support for their cause. To each of them I salute their creativity and originality. Most of all, I support their dedication and support of our beloved pets. Without further delay, I present the top 5 most creative uses of The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy in a charity event:

#5 – The Great Dig Off! Dogs are kept in a separate area while volunteers bury Official Vick Dog Chew Toys. Contestants, (dogs and their owners), are released into the field where they have to sniff out the toys. The dog that sniffs out the most Official Vick Dog Chew Toys wins.

#4 – Bobbing for Vick! Official Vick Dog Chew Toys are placed in a kiddie pool. One at a time dogs are given access to the pool where they lunge down and bring up as many submerged Official Vick Dog Chew Toys as they can in a 2 minute span. The dog that retrieves the most toys within two minutes is the winner.

#3 – The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy Toss! Owners are set in a circle. Official Vick Dog Chew Toys are attached to a rope. Owners swing the rope and release it as far as possible. Their dog has to retrieve the toy and bring it back to the circle without the owner’s assistance. The dog that retrieves the farthest throw and returns the toy back to the circle wins.

#2 – If You Hide I Will Seek! Dogs are first given a Vick Dog Chew Toy to enjoy. Just after the “relationship” is developed the toy is removed from the pet. The toy is then hidden in a location. It is up to the dog to seek out the evil Vick and put him away for the final count. The dog that accomplishes this in the quickest time wins.

And the most original contest associated with The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy is….

#1 – The Great Vick Chew Off! Each dog is given one Official Vick Dog Chew Toy. The first dog to go through the toy and separate it into 4 or more pieces is declared the winner. Contestants compete against the thrill of the chew and the destroying abilities of their fellow K9!

These are just some of the great ideas that bring awareness, contribute to the bottom line assistance of local and national shelters and organizations, bring owners and pets together and create fun events for all to enjoy. I encourage you to celebrate and seek out these events. Show your support and fight against animal abuse. Raise Awareness! Give Back!

If your organization would like assistance with quantities of The Official Vick Dog Chew Toy to help in your event, please let me know how I can help. My email is support@officialvickdogchewtoy.com the website is www.officialvickdogchewtoy.com

Quantities are running low. I have taken steps to allocate a percentage to help with charitable activities and donations. “Giving Back” has been a commitment that I have made from the beginning. My goal is to give the last Official Vick Dog Chew Toy away rather than sell it.

Thanks for your support.

Sincerely,
