Our organization was giving away Vick Chew Toys to people who gave us donations at our local County Fair. We raise money and donate bullet & stab proof vests to police dogs. We were invited to be in the law enforcement tent at the fair. One of our local County Board Members, Jane Thompson, decided to turn it into a race issue instead of a dog fighting issue, even though the chew toy was attached to a dog fighting poster with literature about it was on our table.
The first morning of the fair one of our volunteers, for truely display purposes, hung the toy up in the center of the poster by his neck so that it would hang in the center of the photos of his dogs, that were left alive but scarred. When someone told him it didn't look good, he immediately changed it. There is not a racist bone in his body. It had nothing to do with "hanging" him. He simply had no tape but did have a piece of string and wanted to attach it to the poster. Even though she never saw it, 3 days later, when she heard about it, she chose to make it a mission of hers to tell everyone she could, and to stop us. She also called the chief of police and the county sheriff. She left me a nasty phone message. She let everone know she was not just a citizen but a "County Board Member". She used her position to get the "County Fair Board" riled up with this so called "race issue". Again this was one woman on the fair board who stated that she was speaking for the county fair board. After enough harrassment from the two of them, we were told, by law enforcement that our organization had to remove the dog chew toys from the premises or pack up and leave the law enforcement tent altogether and thus the fairgrounds. I asked the officer, at the time, if it would have been a problem with these people if we had put Brett Favre up there. He said "probably not". These women made this enough of a mission that they spread the rumor around town that we hung a black man, by a noose, in the law enforcement tent at the fair. When I talked with the sheriff, later, we had a good conversation and talked it out. However, I received a "not so nice letter" from the chief of police stating that we couldn't ever again have photos of his police dogs anywhere near these chew toys. And, of course, also thanked us for our good work helping police dogs.
It never occurred to me that anyone would see a vick chew toy as a race issue. He's a well known, convicted felon & dog fighter. I've never seen him as a "black man". Now I've been accused of being a racist. To me, these women who saw the doll as a "black man" are the true racists. And sadly enough, Ms. Thompson is a teacher.
